Smart Cities

Having been involved in central management software (CMS) for the smart control of streetlights in New Zealand, the next stage is the Smart City network.  The streetlight network can have all sorts of sensors and communications throughout a city added and show this on the CMS interface.

The CMS allows the streetlights to be managed via software to turn on/off, dim and schedule streetlights dynamically.  As the system reduces energy use and maintenance costs, installation has a payback which can be determined quite accurately.  Once The network is installed it can then be added to and include such things as pollution sensors, EV charging stations, digital signage and available car parks etc.

This network becomes part of the Smart city infrastructure.

As a result I attended the 2016 and 2017 Barcelona Smart City World Expo Congress to get an update on what is happening in this space throughout the world.

In an effort to enable cities to share experiences with each other employees of cities can join Convercities a growing network around the world with topics such as; Connectivity, Governance, Streetlighting, Water, Mobility and Waste.  If you are a local authority employee you can join at: https://convercities.slack.com
